Seminar exploring democracy and human rights in Chinese political culture, 19th century to the present. Readings include primary materials in translation, which will provide resources for individual research projects. Topics include, but are not limited to, constructions of democracy; human rights in cross-cultural context; the status of minority peoples and Tibet; and the Democracy Movement of the 1970’s and 1980’s.
