Surveys the development of South Asian civilization from its origins to the beginnings of the European conquest (c. 2500 BCE-1700 CE). This course has as its fundamental concerns the several competing social, religious, and political institutions within Indian civilization including those of the aboriginal, Vedic-Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic traditions. We explore the interactions among linguistic, gender, ethnic, religious, “caste,” and class identities. Enrollment Limit: 50. Instructor: M. Fisher
