Survey of Jewish history, 1492-present. Focuses on the challenges of Jewish modernity in Europe, the United States and the Middle East. Covers the end of traditional society and emerging modernity in the experience of Marranos, mystics, messiahs, secular Jews and religious reformers; the struggle for legal equality and social acceptance; family and economics; assimilation and cultural revival; antisemitism and Jewish responses; Zionism; Jewish socialism; the Shoah; founding of Israel.
