This survey course explores the transition between the so-called later medieval and Early Modern periods in Europe (c. 1350-1650). Topics will include the trials and tribulations of the fourteenth century, manifestations of the Renaissance in Italy and elsewhere, late medieval religious belief and practice and the challenges of Protestant Reform, the Catholic Counter-Reformation, new forms of Catholic and non-Catholic spirituality, exploration and contacts beyond the Mediterranean, the causes and consequences of the wars of religion, and the articulation and development of nation state ideology, policies, and administration.
