The place of the Supreme Court and law in American political development (APD). Topics include: defining “political development;” relationships among the Supreme Court, Presidency, Congress, and advocacy groups and the impact of these institutions upon American constitutional law and political change; the 2000 (Bush v. Gore) Presidential Election; Presidential wartime powers; interracial marriage; affirmative action; Native American Citizenship; same sex marriage; abortion choice; labor and civil rights; and changing national and state power. We will study major Supreme Court cases applicable to these topics. This is a core course in the Law and Society Program. Enrollment Limit: 45.
