RELG 328 - Seminar: Selected Topics in the Study of Hinduism: The Ramayana Tradition in South Asia Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 Hours Attribute: 3 HU, CD, WRi
Throughout Indian history many authors and performers have produced many tellings of Rama’s story (Ramkatha). This seminar explores this narrative diversity, with attention to tellings that question the texts by Valmiki and Tulsidas. Versions include women’s song cycles, puppetry performances, tellings that subvert brahmanical norms, and dramatic performances in diaspora communities. Themes explored include the effect of print culture and television on cultural perceptions of Ramayana characters. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 15. Instructor: P. Richman
