RUSS 211 - Russian CinemaNext Offered: 2008-09 Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 3 Hours Attribute: 3 HU, CD, WR
A survey of the major periods, genres, and themes of Russia’s “most important art,” including Soviet montage cinema of the 1920’s (Kuleshov, Vertov, Eisenstein, Dovzhenko), Stalinist “easterns” and propaganda musicals of the 1930’s and 40’s (Vasiliev Brothers, Aleksandrov), the post-Stalinist cinematic revival of the 1950’s and 60’s (Kalatozov, Tarkovsky, Shepitko, Askoldov), and the post-Soviet search for new aesthetics, themes and heroes (Balabanov, Bodrov). Topics will include: the theory and aesthetics of Soviet and Russian film makers; the development of the Russian and Soviet film industry; issues of censorship, production and film distribution. Enrollment Limit: 30. Instructor: A. Forman Prerequisites & Notes This course is cross-referenced with Cinema Studies, and also counts towards that major.
