This course examines the emergence of the African diaspora in the Western Hemisphere from the 15th century onward. It focuses on the African historical background; the European contacts with West Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean; the rise of the Atlantic socio-economic and cultural complex; the development of New World economies and societies; the origins and organization of the slave trade and slavery; slave resistance, emancipation and the establishment of freedom.
