HISP 453 - Beyond Angels and Rascals: Children in Modern Latin American Literature

Semester Offered: Second Semester
Credits (Range): 3 Hours
Attribute: 3 HU, CD

In traditional texts children were often depicted in black-and-white clichés ranging from heavenly innocence to innate wickedness. In 20th century Latin American literature they rather tend to construct a counter-universe to the adult world revealing unspeakable truths, complex alter egos, ancestral fears or surprisingly new ways of storytelling. Works include poetry, short stories and novellas by authors like Storni, Vallejo, Quiroga, Arguedas, Vargas Vicuña, Cortázar, Ferré, Ribeyro, Onetti, Bombal, and García Márquez. Taught in Spanish. Enrollment Limit 20.
Instructor: L. Scholz
