ETHN 302 - Musical Instrument Research: Organology Seminar & Practicum Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 3 Hours This course will combine theoretical and practical approaches to provide an overview of instruments worldwide, an understanding of the basic physics of sound production (with “field trips” to the piano shop and campus organs), and hands-on experience cataloging and classifying all of the non-western instruments in Oberlin’s collection. Students will work collaboratively on a web-based catalog of the instuments with photos and sound, and an ongoing display of the actual instuments in the showcase in the Science Center lobby. Enrollment limit: 8. Instructor: R. Knight Prerequisites & Notes One Ethnomusicology course and consent of the instructor required.
