HIST 172 - From the Iron Curtain to the Velvet Revolution: Eastern Europe under Communism, 1939-Present

This course examines the political, social, intellectual, and cultural history of Eastern Europe from 1939 to the present. Topics include World War II, the Holocaust, and the Stalinist takeover; the “Thaw,” reform communism, dissent, and the revolutions of 1989, and the democratic transition, the war in Yugoslavia, and EU integration. Of particular interest is how individuals experienced and resisted communist policies in everyday life and through participation in social movements. Enrollment Limit: 35.
