This course examines the political, cultural, and social dimensions of totalitarianism in the Soviet Union, fascist Italy, and Nazi Germany. In addition to systems of governance and leadership we explore the role of individuals—as perpetrators, resisters and victims–in these regimes. We also examine the contributions of gender, cultural, and social history to the study and understanding of totalitarianism and explore the memory of totalitarianism in film and literature. Enrollment Limit: 12.
