EAST 285 - Gender, Modernity and Social Change in Korea

This course explores the shifting categories of femininity and masculinity, and women’s roles and experiences of social change within the context of the opening of Korea to foreign powers and the push towards modernization. We will examine how gender intersects with political and economic developments in the modern history of Korea beginning in the late 19th century with particular emphasis on the effects of Japanese colonialism. The course will include comparisons with historical examples in China and Japan.
