HIST 272 - Becoming “American”: Natives, Slaves, and Colonists in British North America

This course investigates the consolidation of a racialized American identity in North America during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We will study immigration patterns, demographic catastrophes, religious revivals, rebellions and wars to understand how British colonists came to occupy a privileged position in relation to native peoples and African slaves, and to have a special relationship with the British empire. The course begins with the Roanoke settlement (1587) and ends with the American Revolution. Enrollment Limit: 30.
