CLAS 217 - The Age of Nero Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 3 Hours Attribute: 3 HU
This course explores the reign of Nero through the lenses of history, literature, architecture, and art, in an attempt to form a more complete picture of this young poet-emperor who may (not) have ‘fiddled’ while Rome burned. Ancient authors (including Petronius, Seneca, Lucan, and Tacitus) read in translation, along with modern scholarship. Topics include decadence & style in literature, art, and politics; women and youth in power; and the senatorial resistance. Enrollment Limit: 45. Instructor: J. Thomas
