Issues of motherhood and reproduction shape both society’s expectations of women and the options available to them, whether or not they have children. This course examines the dramatic changes in the social and cultural meanings of motherhood, as well as in women’s personal experiences of childbirth and child-rearing, from the Depression to the present, focusing particularly on the impact of political, economic, medical, and technological developments. Enrollment Limit: 12.
