This course will trace the cultural shift from the Romantic era to Realism in western theatre through the plays of writers such as Anna Cora Mowatt, Dion Boucicault, Victor Hugo, Georg Buchner, August Strindberg, Gilbert and Sullivan, Anton Chekov, Henrik Ibsen and GB Shaw. We will analyze the plays in the context of the historical and theatrical conditions of the time, looking at technical innovations as well as shifts in acting styles and production methods.
