Must Jewish writing in the American university remain on the margins—“Too Jewish” for the literary mainstream, yet “too white” for the new multicultural curriculum? This course explores the Jewish contribution to 20th Century American literature through examination of the immigrant narrative; the Yiddish literary center on Lower East Side of NYC; issues of translation and assimilation; creative betrayals of folklore; and newish Jewish voices.
