This two-week course concentrates on the writing of book reviews and literary essays, with some attention to other forms of cultural reporting. The instructor will draw on his own experience as a longtime editor and columnist for The Washington Post Book World. Students are encouraged to come to class with questions, examples of their work, and a willingness to listen, take editorial guidance, and practice writing and rewriting. Before the first day of class, students are also urged to read book (and concert and restaurant and other) reviews in newspapers, magazines and online to familiarize themselves with the genre. Readings: Essays and Literary Entertainments—an early collection of the instructor’s journalism—will be the only required text. Enrollment Limit 12. Instructor: M. Dirda
