This course explores the history, cultural contexts, and critical challenges of melodramatic narrative cinema. We’ll study the genre’s origins, the rise and fall of its prestige, its identification as a “feminine” form, its adaptation to different historical and cultural contexts, and its contemporary challenges to cultural analysis.
