This course will offer an overview of the major historical periods, figures, and films of the musical genre, while also framing them within the broader historical, aesthetic and cultural moments out of which they arose. It will also explore how the musical’s unique blending of spectacle and narrative influenced other genres. We will concentrate primarily on American film musicals, although films from France and England, as well as stage productions, will also be included. Enrollment Limit: 30. Instructor: B.
