Study of the tragedies of Euripides in their social and political context. We will read one play in Greek, and several others in English translation. We will also read articles and book chapters in order to grapple with key issues in Euripidean criticism: the genre of tragedy, Euripides’ depiction of women, the role of rhetoric in late fifth century Athens.
