Academics, policy makers, and social reformers have long concerned themselves with understanding the urban poor. This course takes a critical look at the structural forces creating urban spaces popularly regarded as ‘barriors’ and ‘ghettos.’ Course readings will draw from anthropology, sociology, literature and history to examine various approaches to and representations of marginalized urban communities in the past and present.
