This course will introduce students to the various modes of literary production in eighteenth-century Britain, including the periodical essay, the novel, neoclassical and lyric poetry, satire, and drama. We will read these forms of literary expression with a view toward understanding how they illuminate large-scale historical transformations, such as the rise of commodity capitalism, the consolidation of the middle class, and the formation of feminist consciousness.
