Examines the contact Europeans and Americans have had with Asian societies and peoples from antiquity to modern times and how they ‘invented’ a variety of Asias. Key questions include: How do these conceptions of Asia reflect on Westerners’ changing attitudes toward their own societies and on historical and intellectual developments in the modern West?
