HIST 323 - Liberty and Power, Democracy and Slavery in Jacksonian America

An exploration of the cultural dynamics, social relations, economic forces, and political structures that shaped the lives of ordinary Americans-African American, Euro-American and Native American; male and female; rich, middling, and poor; urban and rural; northern and southern, eastern and western; native-born and immigrant-between approximately 1820 and 1850. After reading Alexis de Tocqueville’s classic analysis of Jacksonian democracy, we will focus on recent case studies and current scholarly controversies. Consent of instructor required.
