Students will reflect on their own views about the nature of democracy as they explore some of the ways that democracy has been conceptualized, defended, and criticized in different times and places. Issues in recent democratic theory, such as multiculturalism and the place of deliberation in democracy, will be discussed. Comparisons made with ancient Greek and early modern theories will illuminate how social contexts have shaped – and continue to shape – ideas about democracy. Enrollment limit: 25. Instructor: S.
