POLT 260 - Nationalism and the State in Post Soviet Politics

This course examines state and nation in the Soviet Union and its successor states, focusing on how national identity was created, the role of the states in these processes, and resulting paths of political development. Special topics include: Soviet ethno-federalism; ‘native’ elites and the Soviet state; nationalist mobilization; ethnic minorities and the politics of nation-building; unresolved territorial conflicts; democratic revolution; and oil-based state development.
