This course is an introduction to the field of race and ethnic relations, with particular emphasis on the historical sociology of racial inequality. The course surveys general theoretical approaches to race and ethnicity, and applies them to specific historical developments in American race relations and how political forces shape and change these practices over time and space. A central objective is to understand the conditions under which racial hierarchies, segregation and group conflict emerge. Enrollment Limit: 30.
