This course will provide a broad overview of architecture of the 19th century, from the Napoleonic Era to the decline of academicism. Products of unprecedented and even violent exchanges between cultures, economies, sciences, and religions, the buildings of the 19th century provide crucial insights into the development of modern culture. The architecture of Western Europe and the United States will be central objects of study, but we will also investigate colonial architecture from India to China and New Zealand. Instructor: J.
