This seminar examines the science underlying cancer research and treatment. An understanding that cancer is the result of a series of mutations has emerged from a quarter century of successful cancer research. We will assess the strengths and weaknesses of this description of the origins of cancer, and we will examine the impact of this description on the treatment of cancer.
