We will open with a study of the liberal orthodoxy regarding freedom of expression and the problem of state censorship. We will then turn to various heterodoxies that challenge the conventional wisdom: problems of media concentration and non-state censorship; the problem of silencing via hate speech; etc. We will also address the ways that technology enables and constrains practices of censorship and silencing. Consent of instructor. Enrollment Limit: 10.
