MHST 316 - Studies in Opera: The Baroque Opera Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 Attribute: CNDP; DDHU; WR
A study of selected operas ranging from the early music drama in Florence c. 1600 through Handelian opera seria in London, 1711-1741. Works by Peri, Monteverdi, Cavalli, Purcell, and Lully, among others, are investigated from several standpoints - analytical, dramatic, contextural - in order to observe the interaction of dramatic and musical goals in various operatic styles. Class topics will also include baroque stage-craft and operatic performance practice. Enrollment Limit: 30 Instructor: S. Plank Prerequisites & Notes Consent of instructor required.
