This course will explore developments in European-based concert music, jazz, and popular music during the 1960s. The focus will be on cross currents from style to style during a decade when boundaries were unusually fluid. Consideration will be given the modernist aesthetic, development of minimalism, electronic music, new instrumental and vocal techniques, aleatory composition and performance; hard bop, fusion, free and modal jazz; Motown, the British invasion, rock, soul, folk music. A main theme of the course will be art in the context of political and social developments of the decade. Instructor: C. Macdonald Prerequisites & Notes Prerequisite, second-year student or above.
