Seas have been potent vectors for trade, cultural exchange and imperialism for Western Europe. This course investigates the shifting importance to Europeans of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. We read primary sources including Renaissance merchant notebooks, medieval crusade accounts, and missionary writings as well as the well-developed secondary literature to examine the meaning of theses shifting seas in trade, politics, religion and culture.
