This course brings together a group of 20th-century dramatists – August Strindberg, Tennessee Williams, Jean Genet, Sarah Kane and Suzan-Lori Parks – who share a concern and a fascination for the effects of social power on the individual. Each play examined is paired with a theoretical reading that attempts to explain the human tendency to eroticize power and such acts’ possible social ramifications. Theorists include Frantz Fanon, Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault, Wendy Brown, Judith Butler. Diversity, Post-1900. Enrollment Limit: 25. Instructor: P.
