APST 140 - Internalizing Rhythms Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A workshop for instrumentalists and vocalists that focuses on the student’s ability to internalize and comprehend a range of rhythms that originate in multiple cultures. The teaching emphasizes speaking rhythm and then performing the lessons on the frame drum. The course materials are based upon a contemporary application of old-world teaching methods from North Africa, the Mid-east, and South India. The rhythms are poly-rhythmical an cyclical in nature. The playing techniques implemented are basic hand and finger techniques adapted from South Indian drumming and can be applied to a variety of percussion instruments. Instructor: J.
