This course will provide a survey of the history of Rome, from its prehistoric origins to its ‘decline and fall’ in the fifth century A.D. Attention will be given to the evolution of Roman social and political structures, Roman imperialism, and the transition from paganism to Christianity. Readings from the ancient sources will provide the basis for lectures and discussions.
