ENGL 299 - Introduction to the Advanced Study of Literature


Semester Offered: First Semester, Second Semester
Credits (Range): 4 hours

This course will introduce students to fundamental issues, approaches, and methods in the study of literature. We will consider the issues of form and aesthetics, literary history, and literature as a social activity and part of a larger cultural context. Throughout we will return to the basic questions: What do we study? How do we study it? Why do we study it?

Prerequisites & Notes
NB. This course is required for English majors and minors who declare after July, 2009. This course is intended to prepare students for the English major and advanced work in literary study. Students who are interested in majoring or minoring in English should take this course by the end of their sophomore year and before they declare the English major. For complete prerequisites, please refer to the English Program section titled 200-Level Courses.
