ENGL 348 - Modern Drama: Ibsen to Pirandello This course may also count for the major in (consult the program or department major requirements) : Theater, Comparative Literature Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 4 hours Attribute: 4HU, WR This course explores the different ways in which “reality” was staged by playwrights including Ibsen, Chekhov, Strindberg, Shaw, and Pirandello. We will consider how modern theatrical movements such as realism, naturalism, expressionism, and metadrama sought to represent “reality,” focusing on evolving stagecraft. Emphasis will also be placed on the historical and cultural contexts surrounding the early stages of modern drama. Diversity, 1700-1900 OR Post-1900 (not both). Enrollment Limit: 25 Instructor: C.
