What role have filmmakers played in reshaping Russian culture over the past two decades? How did they transform Soviet myths to shape new visions for the Yeltsin nineties and the Putin aughts? To what extent did they draw from classic Russian literature by Gogol, Tolstoy and Chekhov? The films and texts under study focus on such topics as violence and crime, youth culture, the superrich Chechnya, rural Russia, and the Soviet past. P/NP grading only.
