LATN 311 - Seneca and Boethius

Study in Latin of the prose works of Seneca and Boethius, two philosopher-politicians executed by the state, Seneca by the emperor Nero and Boethius by the Ostrogoth king Theodoric. Texts include Seneca’s Consolation to Helvia, On the Brevity of Life, Apocolocyntosis, and Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy. We will explore the relationship of philosophy to politics under authoritarian rule as well as the language and style of Silver Age and late antique Latin prose. Prerequisite: LATN 202 or equivalent.
