ENGL 359 - ”Race-ing” Studies in Classic American Literature

Taking Lawrence’s Studies in Classic American Literature and Morrison’s Playing in the Dark as critical points of departure for exploring the American imagination “symptomatically,” this course considers how race has functioned as a provocative, tendentious literary figure – if also a social category – useful for investigating national anxieties (and pleasures!) in classic works of American fiction. In order to illuminate our close readings, the course will also take up contemporary theoretical explorations of “whiteness” and “blackness.” American, Diversity, 1700-1900.
