FREN 405 - The Legacy of the Enlightenment Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 hours Attribute: 3HU, CD The Enlightenment’s yearning for rationalistic positiveness has been accused of blinding us to the uncertainties of knowledge. Its quest for universalism and defense of individualism has been pinpointed as detrimental to multiculturalism and diversity. This course will reevaluate this view of the Enlightenment through the lens of works by such figures as Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, Condorcet, Raynal, de Gouges et al., by asking, as Kant and Foucault did, ‘What is the Enlightenment?’ Enrollment Limit: 12 Instructor: L.
