From its invention in 1839, photography was co-opted to serve various ideological and political purposes. This course surveys thematically the relationship between photography and politics, emphasizing the medium’s uses in revolutionary and war contexts, for political propaganda, social protest, and museum institutional critique. The class includes weekly meetings, several mandatory lectures by prominent practitioners and photography scholars, and a screening or two.
