This seminar will consider the invention of nature in literary, visual, philosophical, and scientific texts. We will consider how cultural forces have shaped representations of nature, and how they have changed over time. Along the way we will consider what representations of nature can tell us about human nature, and how they can help us to engage with complex ethical questions about our environment and how we live in it.
