APST 770 - Balkan Ensemble Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 This ensemble will introduce students to a variety of traditional musical styles from Southeast European countries (such as Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, and Serbia) and to their historical and societal contexts. Through rehearsing the music of several ethnic groups, students will learn different characteristic approaches to ornamentation, phrasing, and accompaniment on their own instruments and voices and will also have the opportunity to learn to perform on traditional Balkan instruments. The ensemble will work on developing a repertoire over the course of the semester and perform this music at an end-of-semester concert. Enrollment Limit: 20 Instructor: I.
