This course examines the history, theory, and techniques of avant-garde cinema from a global perspective and seeks to expand the concept of cinematic practice beyond convention. Beyond developing a basic knowledge of avant-garde cinema through screenings, readings, lectures, discussions, and workshops, each student will—through a semester-long project—explore the notion of individual studio research, situated within the context of historical and contemporary experimental film and video production, and based in a commitment to personal expression.
