This course examines the intersection of creation, kingship, and divinities in the myths, historical narratives, iconography, and royal archives of Mesopotamia, Ugarit and ancient Israel. Themes include royal control of religious narrative; the divine world as a projection of human political structures; and the presentation of kingship as a gift of the gods.
