RELG 350 - Emile Durkheim and Social Theories of Religion

Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) is perhaps the first great sociologist of religion. His Elementary Forms of the Religious Life showed the way in which ritual serves as a kind of social glue, creating and sustaining communities, and remains illuminating. We’ll read Durkheim’s work in the context of both his life (he was the son and grandson of rabbis) and later theories of religion and society. Students with backgrounds in other disciplines are welcome.
